Christine Whyte, 26
Web developer, One Plus

"I feel part of something important, as the work I do can change people’s lives"

So, what do you actually do?

I develop websites for small community groups and for One Plus, which works with one parent families. I have assisted in creating an on-line learning environment for community groups, I produce on-line courses and deliver training in email, internet and writing for the web to staff and service users.

Did you need any training or qualifications for this job?

I did in-house training using animation software, databases, and dynamic websites. I also have to keep up to date on the latest in computers and IT, reading stuff on the internet and in trade magazines. I am currently also doing an SVQ level 4 in Learning and Development.

How did you get into this job?

I was interested in using the internet, in various different environments. I developed a website for a shop, then worked for start up company.

What does your typical day involve?

Planning updates to websites, adding stories to newsletters and ongoing technical work. I also meet regularly with a wide variety of people as I need to know what they’re doing and what they want, to ensure web-sites and newsletters meet their needs.

What kind of personality is best suited to this work?

It is most important to be a good communicator, as much of the job involves explaining technology to people who know little about it. It also helps to be logical, a good planner and creative.

What are the best things about your job?

I have a free reign to be creative about what I do. I get to try out ideas. I also feel part of something important as the work I do can change people’s lives.

And what are the challenges?

There can be a lack of cash for IT infrastructure, but that makes you more creative about solutions. It can also be difficult for people to find time for training as they are busy.

Any top tips for someone wanting to get into this work?

Enjoy your job, and treat it like a hobby. Talk about what you do, learn what’s new out there that you can use and practice explaining things.
